Altona Beach Sunset Photos (December 2020)

I headed to Altona Beach as the sun set on the 30th December 2020 and got some photos with my new NISI six stop filter.

These boats looked a bit like a painting to me, so in editing I put a film simulation on and added some grain to make them look even more like a brush had been at work.

I kept this one because the guy on the right walked into the shot and stood there for a few seconds looking out at the water. It was a great moment to capture on camera as the last of the light faded. Up to 1/2 second shutter speed here.

Altona Beach After Sunset

Altona Beach Sunset

This photo is very different to the rest, taken on the beach away from the rocks with the camera as low as it could go on the tripod.

Again it was taken with a very long 40-second shutter speed thanks to the Nisi Filter 6-stop ND filter.

I love the little ridges on the beach leading out to the water which is like a blanket thanks to the long shutter speed. The sun had completely gone by this point with just a small amount of orange light appearing on the horizon and lighting up the gaps between the clouds.

Best Shot – Altona Beach Sunset With Rocks

Sunset On Altona Beach

I got some shots I was really pleased with, but this was my favourite of the lot and I think I’m going to get it printed up.

At 40 seconds the water is completed flat and the clouds looking more like ghosts in the sky. The purple light that appeared after the sun had gone made for a beautiful scene contrasted against the dark rocks.

I’m perched on a slippery rock, one foot in the sea with everything crossed that my camera didn’t blow over into the water. Got away with it and worth the anxiety (note to self must get camera insurance!)
